Cowboy Up! Larry & Mekkuzz |
It was a beautiful Alberta day and three Naija boys were on the road en route to Sundre, a small town west of highway 2 between the cities of Calgary and Red Deer. The drive was enlivened by the picturesque countryside interspersed with farms and the ubiquitous cattle that makes "Alberta Beef" famous.

The drive was filled with the high octave arguments that is guaranteed to happen when more than one Nigerian is within the same space. We talked politics, church, Nigeria and Canada in general and it was not Long before we arrived in the parking lot of Piros, the Greek restaurant where we had some beautiful Steak lunch and met up with our dear friend Larry, his wife Leslie and Brad our other riding partner.
After Lunch we set off for the Outfitter, Sunset Guiding & Outfitting where we appraised the Horses. The outfitter selected horses for us and we mounted.

The ride was through the mountains and woods surrounding the Red Deer River, a slinking waterway that winds around the mountains west of Sundre. We rode through bushes, water, mountain and fields like the journey of Omenuko!

Then it was all aboard to the cabin where we were to spend the night in rustic comfort, without electricity or running water, just like in the old days in Mbaise, hahahaha!
Campfire Boys |
The log cabin, located at the end of a 6-mile dirt road with bumps and potholes to rival the streets of Abule Egba was a small wooden structure built by a family in Northern Alberta, then dismantled and carefully moved to the location on the grounds of a ranch.

The Cabin |
The night was filled with fire, smoke and mosquitos, we ate dinner prepared by our able chef, Larry must have been surprised by the animated and loud discussions at the top of our voices arguing as usual about all things Naija!

We turned in between 11 pm and midnight, struggling into our sleeping bags and leaving Larry to sleep outside in his tent while we were cocooned up in the loft of the cabin snoring like there was no tomorrow.
Morning found us outside in a beautiful morning, a little chilly but clear and bright. Still wrapped in the sleeping bags, I went out to enjoy the vista.

Outside in the Beautiful Morning |
After breakfast, we went to try our hands at fishing. Before going on this trip, we had all enthusiastically gone to acquire our fishing licenses so, we were stoked to get out to the water and swing our fly fishing rods with baits prepared by Larry.

After two hours of casting and catching nothing, we had had it and decided to dip in the cold waters of the Red Deer river. We stripped to under wears and went dipping. That was where Larry found us.
What a great trip, it has been etched in our memories. Now we share with readers.
